A brief excursus on philological method (beginning with Richard Bentley) and, more broadly, on the critical methodology of scientific research (from John Stuart Mill to Karl Popper) aimed at highlighting the major theoretical and practical importance of the recent querelle concerning the so-called papyrus of Artemidorus. Moreover, the conclusions of dissenting scholars are evaluated and compared in a concise synopsis.
